Christmas is Movie Time!

The holiday season is upon us and while the television networks prepare to air a slew of traditional Christmas favorites like Miracle on 34th Street, Hollywood’s film studios are readying for a full slate of new movie releases throughout the month of December. So whether you prefer a trip to the local movie theater, renting and watching videos at home or simply pulling up the latest theatrical webisodes on your laptop, you’ll find plenty of new entertainment now available throughout the holiday season and into early 2010. With most stores closed, Christmas Day has become one of the nation’s most popular movie-going days of the year as families look for activities they can do together. Last holiday season witnessed the release of a number of popular and highly acclaimed films, including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Marley and Me The Curious Case of Benjamin Button went on to receive thirteen Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. Meanwhile, Marley and Me, based on the best-selling book by John Grogan and starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston set a record for the largest Christmas Day box office ever with a whopping $14.75 million in ticket sales. This holiday season figures to be no different, with a variety of feature films ready to debut between now and the end of the year. And several are sure to be fan favorites, raking in huge numbers at the box office. Among the scheduled December releases are two aimed at the younger folk, Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel as well as The Princess and the Frog. Disney’s highly anticipated The Princess and the Frog introduces Tiana as the Disney brand’s newest official “princess.” Many of the other scheduled December releases feature a wide range of big name actors – making the holiday season extra special for movie fans. December 2009 releases include Armored starring Columbus Short, Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne; Everybody’s Fine with Robert DeNiro, Drew Barrymore and Kate Beckinsale; Serious Moonlight starring Kristen Bell, Justin Long and Meg Ryan; Up in the Air with George Clooney and Anna Kendrick; Did You Hear About the Morgans featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant and Sam Elliott; The Lovely Bones with Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz; and Nine starring Marion Cottilard, Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson.
