Get online and laugh out loud!
Author: Greg Nelson

From Laurel & Hardy and the Three Stooges to Monty Python and Steve Martin, the comedy genre has long been a favorite amongst Hollywood movie makers. Whether you prefer pure slapstick silliness or romantic comedy, there is never a lack of laugh out loud entertainment in the movie industry.
Comedy films first appeared on the Hollywood landscape as far back as the early 1900s when Charlie Chaplin used slapstick to bring chuckles from his audience in the days of silent movies. Of course, the advent of sound opened up a whole new realm of comedy as scriptwriters could incorporate jokes and create more complex comedic situations. The Marx brothers helped to immediately revolutionize comedy with their fast-talking humor.
The Three Stooges helped introduce an entirely new brand of screwball comedy with their wacky adventures and over-the-top physical humor.
Another form of popular comedy still in use today is the parody or spoof designed to mock scenes from earlier Classic films through sarcasm and acting that is stereotypical or obviously exaggerated. Movies ranging from Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the laugh-filled Airplane! to Young Frankenstein and more recently the Scary Movie series, the comedic parody continues to bring laughs to the theater.
National Lampoon’s Animal House is perhaps the best known film utilizing silly humor that makes fun of authority. That film also relied on a variety of gross out comedy that relies on vulgar, sexual, bathroom style humor to draw laughs. Other examples of the gross out comedy include Porky’s, There’s Something About Mary and American Pie.
Black comedy typically features a satire on taboo subjects like murder, death or even war. Arsenic and Old Lace was one of the earliest films to offer up this style of black comedy way back in 1944.
Perhaps the most popular form of humor in terms of box office success is the romantic comedy – typically offering up a light-hearted relationship with a variety of comedic interactions and sexual tension that ultimately results in a happy ending of boy gets girl! From It’s a Wonderful World starring James Stewart and Claudette Colbert in 1939 to When Harry Met Sally with Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in 1989 to The Proposal featuring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock in 2009, the romantic comedy continues to work its movie magic year after year.
